Chasing Amy

Chasing Amy ★★★★

EASILY my favorite Kevin Smith film. The way this pulled me in with its characters and story and then managed to keep me there for the entire thing is proof positive that when the director is in his element, he doesn't need laughs to win over his viewers.

There are some undoubtedly rough aspects thematically and otherwise (e.g. bisexuals apparently hadn't been invented yet and straight people use slurs as terms of endearment for queer acquaintances because they're woke!). But what it loses in crass dude proselytizing, Smith makes up for with a warmth that flows from scene to scene. Joey Lauren Adams and Ben Affleck have natural chemistry with each other and give two memorably authentic portrayals that endeared their characters to me more and more as the film went on. Me? Caring for fictional characters? It's more likely than you think!

It's no small thing to make such a polished, interesting, thoughtful and sex-positive (not to mention gay-positive) film and to then proceed to successfully market it to a mainstream audience. I shudder to think of the straight man pining for his lesbian friend who saw this during its run...Probematic is the nicest way to describe the message he might've walked away with. But more than two decades later, one would hope the world has evolved enough to appreciate this as a peak-90s rarity that charms as much as it encourages thought. I walked away from this smiling and appreciating a movie whose ever-welcome belief system revolves around the simple mantra of love and let love.

P.S. What even is this poster? Affleck sports a surprisingly attractive goatee for the entirety of the film and Jay & Silent Bob only have one scene (mercifully).
P.P.S. Speaking of the not-so-dynamic duo, there seems to be a correlation between the amount of screen time that they get and how much I like a Smith film.
P.P.P.S. This is the most 90s movie I've seen in a good while and it really brought me back in the best way.

Just added to My Happy Place Canon.
