Jack Aling’s review published on Letterboxd:
Revolution is the Only Solution.
A devastating modern history lesson, Judas and The Black Messiah is led by the astounding performances of Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield.
The story of Fred Hampton is an infuriating one and is further proof of the injustice that carries through to today, but that makes this and films like it so important to add to the conversation. Kaluuya is an immense screen presence - you hang off every word of his exceptional speeches and you can see the passion and commitment to the role in every scene. He does Hampton and his legacy proud.
LaKeith rivals with an equally compelling performance. He said he had to turn to therapy after filming due to the intensity of the role - and I don't blame him. You can feel the anxiety seep through the screen as the intensity slowly rises.
A powerful piece that radiates confidence in front of and behind the camera that demands your attention and respect. A pure powerhouse.
