Spencer

Spencer ★★★

Larrain once again mines psychological horror out of the cold day-to-day life of aristocracies. Using stately camera movements and an excellent Johnny Greenwood score, he creates an effectively eerie, oppressive atmosphere around Stewart’s fearless performance. While it certainly shows the dehumanizing effects of such an ancient, inflexibly traditional ruling class structure, Spencer fails to make any substantially deeper points beyond surface-level observations and on-the-nose symbols, whose main purpose is to merely gawk at these weird Royals. Though gorgeously executed, it feels thinly-sketched and improvised, too content with being a “mood piece” than a credible character study. You’ll never be more relieved to hear a Mike + The Mechanics needle drop, I guarantee you this! (2.5/4)
