Rock’s review published on Letterboxd:
Visually stunning, meticulously realized and forcefully executed in the way I expect from Eggers. But compared to his previous movies, this left me a little cold, and I'm not entirely sure why that is. I was tempted to say that it has less a sense of arc than those movies, but I also think that it doesn't really get you on the same wavelength as the hero. In The Witch and The Lighthouse (especially the latter), he's able to sync you up emotionally with their protagonists that I don't think he does here, and I felt like I was observing the extremity of his experience but not really engaging with it. All that being said, it's nice to see a distinct vision made on a budget of this level in a time when this much money is almost exclusively reserved for franchises.
