From Dusk Till Dawn

From Dusk Till Dawn ★★★½

I'm sure Rodriguez and Tarantino are good friends, but casting the latter as a psychotic weirdo alongside George Clooney and making the foot close-ups common in his filmography come off as incredibly creepy feels like a pretty brutal dig. Given that they collaborated again in the thematically similar Grindhouse, I'm sure QT got over it.

This is pretty fun, but like Planet Terror, it feels like Rodriguez likes exploitation movies but doesn't really get them. The first half, perhaps because it's looser and more restrained, feels a lot closer to the real thing with its sweaty, sunburned ambience. The second half feels a little too cartoonish for me to embrace, but its energy level makes it hard to dislike. Some high impact cameos add to the fun, including a hat trick by Cheech Marin.

Clooney's admission last year that he uses a Flowbee finally explains what the hell is going on with his hair in this.
