    The Descent

    ★★★★

I'm not really sure how I've gone so long without watching the Descent. It's remarkable in almost every way. The plot is good, the atmosphere is oppressing and it's visually stunning. Some of the shots are just beautiful, which is uncommon for horror cinema. Not to mention the gore, effects and foley, which are all excellent.

My only complaint is with the ending. It's somewhat inconclusive, jarring and I feel like the main character did deserve a more dignified ending.…

    ★★★½

I'm very impressed by Cube . Apparently it had a tiny budget, at $ 365.000, but it works efficiently within that budget to create an original and satisfying plot.

I generally enjoy films where you have a group of people stuck in a situation where they need to work together to escape. It's not only interesting to see the discovery of the surroundings and working out a plan to escape, you also get to see how people interact in a…

    Thunder Run

    ★★★

Thunder Run is about an old spec ops truck driver and his grandson, moving a box of plutonium through some desert in the US while being assaulted by terrorists.

While it's nothing amazing, it's a fun B action movie with some veteran actors, some familiar faces from 80's horror movies, that one lab tech from CSI, Dharma's dad from Dharma & Greg as a villain, and plenty of stunts and explosions. It reaches the bare minimum as far as plot and characterization go, but it's tickles that 80's action movie itch I got in a nice way.

    Fitzcarraldo

    ★★½

I'm thinking this film shoot must have been about as arduous as actually moving a steamboat over top of a mountain.

That said, while the production is fantastic and the movie spoke to me thematically speaking, it also felt quite tedious and procedural, and failed to keep my attention. It's one I might enjoy watching more with someone else, so I'll probably rewatch it at some point.

    Lifeforce

    ★★★½

Lifeforce is a remarkable oddity, something that feels like it could never happen again. It's a giant schlocky mess with lots of production value. Both tonally and plotwise it feels like a mix between Alien and Return of the Living Dead, which might be explained by the fact that Dan O'Bannon worked on all projects.

The first half is very Alien, with more sci-fi aspects, the discovery in space and the mystery building around the weird naked people found in…

    Zombie Flesh Eaters

    ★★★½

Great slow burn zombie flick with plenty of gore and cool zombies. The plot is pretty simple but quite coherent relative to some of Fulci's other films. It does take a while to get going, but once it pops off, it's just magnificent. There's also plenty of cool and creative shots and the Fabio Frizzi score is killer as well. I think he even reused some of it for City of the Living Dead.

As Zombie is Italian, it's not…
