War for the Planet of the Apes

War for the Planet of the Apes ★★

substance over style; one of the most emotionally bereft, dull, and painfully edgy studio films I’ve ever seen. it’s almost as if 20th Century Fox saw how the production of Logan was going and decided to copy and paste the maturity and heartbreak of that into a movie about monkeys with guns (any maturity is nonexistent in this, by the way.) this movie is an encapsulation of a 13 year old who runs a film page on Instagram and thinks that movies like The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road are the unironical peak of cinema, and what would happen if that person tried to direct a movie; the end result is bad, obviously. didn’t really like the bland direction and cinematography of this, and I definitely did NOT appreciate the Holocaust metaphors that this movie so bluntly tries to bludgeon over the viewer’s head; the victims of one of the most horrific events in human history are, of course, nothing compared to the suffering of CGI monkeys. this movie just aggrevates me the more and more I think about it, and I really hope that there is a swift turnaround on this.
