Alphaville ★★★

Can somebody please give Alpha 60 a lozange? His voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

I appreciate what this film is doing to set the stage for dystopian noirs such Blade Runner, Gattaca, Brazil, Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, etc. to really take the ball and run with it, but I think it suffers from being too intellectual for its own good. It’s the Philip K. Dick pitfall, where the protagonist is unrealistically self-aware of the philosophies that govern the mirror universes they inhabit, and are unrealistically articulate and verbose about their moral viewpoint, so during their big confrontations with the villain, instead of just being like “Hey, I’ve come to realize that the status quo you’ve manufactured is inhumane,” the hero lobbies pure ideological gibberish such as “My religion is the inspiration of conscience.” Huh? Wazzat? To quote Patrick Star, “I don’t get it.”
