It happens a lot that I recognise movies to be (outspokenly) stylish, evocative and methaporical, rather than just 'entertaining' or driven by a clear plot. When I discuss them or read about them, I have to take into account that these movies are labeled 'style over substance' nowadays. A pity, knowing that this label implies a certain lack of substance. Personally, I prefer to say that the style IS the substance in these movies.
A note: I permitted a wide selection, i.e. some movies could be more 'stylish' than others. Furthermore, I don't necessarily love all the movies I included. My point is that the critiques are misplaced in many instances, not that all these movies are masterpieces (well, some of them are;)
