The Color of Pomegranates 1969
parajanov's the colour of pomegranates ritualistic tableaux depict the life and death of troubadour sayat-nova through his expressionist works and religious fervour. parajanov does not comply with the narrative conventions of his medium. he crafts a biopic told through a consciousness narrative that leaves the viewer to interpret its transcendental pageant of sayat’s 18th-century christian transcaucasus. i’m not entirely sure whether or not i actually understand what i’ve seen, but i think that’s the beauty of it, everyone’s experience is entirely subjective, and very few filmmakers can achieve such a feat.

Asteroid City 2023
the poster child for style over substance and a borderline wes anderson burlesque. wes is synonymous with heavy stylisation, and while uniqueness is no bad thing, asteroid city feels almost like a caricature of his prior work. and behind its travestying, pastel veneer lies an aimless narrative that simply lacks the charm of his other films.

C'mon C'mon 2021
mike mills’s twee, but poignant ode to the bittersweet complexity of parenting. surprisingly nails b&w filmmaking but ultimately falls flat for me.
