TajLV’s review published on Letterboxd:
A lot of veterans came back from WWII with rage and sexual issues, an inability to adjust to life outside the military. My father was among them and, like Freddie Quell (Phoenix), he turned to the bottle for solace. Quell goes a step further and links his existence to cult leader Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman) and The Cause, only very loosely disguised versions of L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology. Loved the jail scene as well as Mrs. Dodd’s character played by Adams. The costumes and scenery were perfectly 1951. I would have liked to have seen more of others “processing,” but otherwise it was a treat from start to finish.
