i'm not going to describe the day that preceded seeing this movie with Mommy, but suffice it to say the phrase "today was a long year" was used several times. so yeah, i was maybe in the perfect state of mind to see a Rian Johnson-directed star-studded murder mystery where awful people are repeatedly told to fuck off.

on the other hand… is there a wrong state of mind in which to see a Rian Johnson-directed star-studded murder mystery where awful people are repeatedly told to fuck off?

i was advised to go into this blind but i honestly don't know what i could say to ruin this? it presents a pretty solid argument to never miss a Rian Johnson movie, and go back and watch the ones i haven't seen yet. it wields catharsis just as effectively as The Last Jedi but without Star Wars as the backdrop. the visuals are gorgeous, which is not often something you particularly notice in this genre.

(ending spoilers incoming)

and it was all leading to words that i thoroughly needed to hear at that exact moment in time: "i want you to remember something that’s very important. you won. not by playing the game harlan’s way, but yours. you’re a good person."

i don't know if i'm a good person. i know i try my best. i know i'm honest. i know that i'm generally timid but i will throw myself between my loved ones and harm without a moment's hesitation. if that's what a good person is, maybe i am one. i don't know. i hope i am.

but i saw this movie at a moment in time where i really needed to hear someone say those words. that, i know.
