Quicke Review:

Where the Crawdads Sing is an okay movie. Two of the main factors that led me to go out and see this film in theaters were that it starred two young actors, Daisy Edgar Jones and Harris Dickinson, who’s recent work has proven them to be very promising and that I love seeing any film on the big screen when I’m not in my home city. From the very first trailer I knew exactly that this film would be the type of glamorized best selling book adaptation that’s heavily marketed to a 50+ audience and now that I’ve seen it I can say I was certainly right. To this film’s credit there was aspects that landed much better than I had thought but besides those everything else either fell flat or didn’t stand out enough. The story does a solid job of building itself around a main character you can’t help but root for, the atmosphere is conveyed well, and the good acting being the elements that were most notably positive. On the other end of the stick generally the narrative is very inconsistent in jumping between all these different plot points, some of which are in various time periods in Kya’s life, and the third act pulls off an odd problem of feeling like it’s both being rushed and dragging. In terms of the Oscars this film is at an interesting position of being major awards bait that I’m sure actors such as David Strathairn signed onto with the hope of getting nominations but will absolutely not be a contender due to it’s release date, lack of popularity, and separation from the awards race. Overall Where the Crawdads Sing is the type of film that’s entertaining and mildly moving in the moment partly due to it’s extreme sentiment but practically as soon as the credits roll you already begin to forget about it.
