every bit of horror from the 2010s, from neo gialli revivalism to hereditary to every stranger things inspired 80s nostalgia trip to resident evil to wans brand of zany beligerent incompetent midbrow studio horror to like idk remedy games and bloober team and silent hill fan games, just happening at once, concurrently, with additional 70s exploitation film racism in the costume department and like network television police procedural caricatures. the fact that ray chase, or noctis lucis caem from final fantasy xv(!!), is the voice of gabriel is kind of the punchline, like, this is a video game man's idea of movie maximalism. kind of like how dennis cooper doesnt read that many books but does watch a lot of movies, wan watches a few movies but man does he love his games and tv.
the impetus for the film is clearly wan reading about teratomas, seeing the etymology of tera was greek for monsters and also a stand in medically for birth defects, and suffix oma relating to cancerous cells, and going yeah cancer monster sounds good we're going with that and every other decision from there kind of makes more sense in that light. the gabriel has been eating your fetuses reveal... reproductive dysphoria moment 😭 the abuse up front is like given sound effects like batman arkham asylum. when jake or whatever the fuck his name is pounds madisons head into the wall i could see the xray cam like in injustice or mortal kombat. no thesis here but man..
