Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ★★★½

Okay so I had some really good intros for this review cumulating in my head earlier, but I can’t remember them for the life of me—so just pretend I said something witty.

Shang-Chi and The Legend Of The Ten Rings was very, very good. Like I was honestly ready to like this movie, but not in the ways that I ended up liking it. I honestly went into this, ready for something akin to Enter The Dragon and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon but instead I got Rumble In The Bronx meets Godzilla vs Kong which is…kinda awesome? Because I really do love both of those movies, but I can also acknowledge they have some glaring flaws.

Which pretty much optimizes what I think about Shang-Chi it’s really good, like really, really good—it’s a visual spectacle, an auditory illusion, and a fun ride, but it’s bumpy. Mixed in with the practical fight sequences that introduce powerful Chinese wire work into the MCU, is an ass mountain of CGI that just makes me roll my eyes. For every really cool series of shots and ideas, there’s an irreverent break or a wonky chromakey.

Overall, I really liked Shang-Chi, but it’s sadly not a heavily beloved piece of filmmaking that inspired me to…make a movie or something. Not every film can be that, not every film needs to be that, but I would’ve loved if this became my new favorite Marvel movie.
