M3GAN ★★★

M3GAN does exactly what it needs to in offering a tightly written, campy horror comedy with an entertaining villain and seamless visual effects. It’s very funny! I also enjoyed the light commentary on surveillance capitalism and how technology can distort the role of the parent, but it really doesn’t surprise you otherwise, which will leave some people (me) a bit unsatisfied. I was especially longing for some visual flair - Johnstone’s bland direction is very nagging when you know James Wan co-wrote the script. I wanted to see M3GAN do a whip-around chair throw like Gabriel. I’m curious to see what the R-rated cut has in store.
