Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One 2023
even better the second time. essentially the kasparov-deep blue of modern action cinema, the cold algorithmic certainty of fate up against hunt, the gambler, operating on legendary foot speed and sheer force of will. the storytelling is biblical, and the build and release is perfect, leone-esque in some places. cruise and rebecca ferguson have built something really tender and touching on the fly in these three franchise movies, a triumph of blockbuster acting. klementieff is so fucking good.

This movie is totally inexplicable. There are exactly two cool ideas. The first is a human that doesn’t know he’s a robot becoming the unwitting Judas to John Connor’s Christ figure, which rocks. The second is a moment in the first act where Connor muses out loud about whether killing Kyle Reese would reset the timeline, and what that would mean for the war against Skynet.
