James Wan and Leigh Whannell, you twisted mf’s. You are both truly brilliant.
This, in my opinion, is a masterpiece. Whannell sets it up and Wan makes it come to life and it just works on every level. The minimalist setting, the slowly unraveling backstory, and the purely humane horror of it all. There’s no supernatural element, or loud and abrasive jump scares. Now I gotta watch Paper Moon to see if Tatum O’Neal really deserved Best Supporting Actress over Linda Blair.
So simple, yet so effective. There is so much raw emotion in these performances. Everything from Chris’ growing frustration with a lack of help and answers to Damien’s inner conflict over his faith. And Linda Blair absolutely killing it as a demonic twelve year old. Just some jaw dropping acting going on here.
