Mysterious Skin 2004
A harrowing watch filled with lots of compassion. I respect Araki for making a film like this considering the sensitive topics it focuses on and how messy it could have been under a different filmmaker. He doesn't shy away from the mortifying subject matter at hand, but despite the explicit focus the film never feels exploitative. That final scene was a beautifully emotional conclusion, especially after seeing all the trauma the two main characters endured since their childhood.
