I wouldn't die for anyone or anything, but I'd probably take a very non-lethal bullet to the shoulder for Marcel the Shell.

This is a reminder that even now, in an age of endless connected content franchises and reboots, we still have untapped potential for surprising poignancy without stuffy pretense in cinema, and also that this can be achieved while still being way funnier than one might expect. The voice acting, technical/visual approach and very tricky tonal balancing act in this film are remarkable, elevating an otherwise simple (but unique) story into a magically charming experience.

A complete redefining of all that cinema can and should be. A new level of creativity in both humor and presentation. A third act that somehow makes you cry tears of sadness and hysterical laughter at the same exact moment.

Most of the time when I watch a film, I am thinking about what I will use for my final grade. With this instant classic, my only real struggle was deciding where I would…

I enjoy Nic Cage as much as anyone, but there's just very little to care about with this surprisingly bland film. The entire premise of the source material, as presented here, feels cheesy and ridiculous. No one involved with the film, from the writer/director to the actors, seems to want to make it fun or interesting enough to overlook that. Does Cage even want to be here, beyond just grabbing a paycheck? Wes Bentley is doing Razzie level work here.…

Although I've seen the Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Final Destination movies countless times, this film somehow has completely eluded me until now, even as someone who grew up in this time period. This carries a lot of those same vibes with the slasher set pieces, direction style, score (That intro piece is Tubular Bells-esque... fantastic!) and big ensemble teen/university casting. I think this does have a little bit of Ghost Ship syndrome, in which the…

On one hand, it's pretty shocking to see that such a confidently presented and steady film is actually the feature debut for director Darius Marder. On the other hand, it's almost expected that this could be the case when a film feels so unique and fresh. This is a viewing experience so intimate that you might feel almost voyeuristic while watching. This is down to a few things mostly: the cinematography style, a decidedly naturalistic tone that almost feels like…
