Charlie Benjamin Brown’s review published on Letterboxd:
“I will avenge you, father. I will save you, mother. I will kill you, Fjölnir.”
Robert Eggers doesn’t miss. This was easily one of my most anticipated films of 2022 and it did not disappoint in the slightest. The Northman is an unbridled and unforgivingly visceral revenge film that utilises its Viking setting to absolute perfection.
It’s clear how integral making the film look and feel authentic to the times was to Eggers. As I was watching the film, I couldn’t help but get completely absorbed into the saturated and grim reality of the film. The set pieces and characters just feel so otherworldly while still feeling dredged in its brutal historic reality making watching the film almost hypnotic. It’s unlike any other viewing experience I’ve had.
The Northman may just be a masterpiece. I couldn’t find a single flaw in its 2h 17m runtime. If The Lighthouse didn’t already, this film undoubtedly cements Robert Eggers as one of the greatest directors of our time. I will give this film a posthumous A+ and while the brutal and vicious subject matter may put off some viewers, I have no choice but to recommend seeing this film for yourself. It’s really something special.
