Sonny Bunch’s review published on Letterboxd:
This is one of those year-end movies where I feel mildly befuddled by the overwhelming praise. I mean, on the one hand, I get it: there are a couple of really solid performances, the whole thing is shot and lit with expert care, it's occasionally darkly funny, etc. But the thing as a whole just doesn't work for me: I don't care for the melodramatic tone, I found the musical choices offputting even if I think I understood what Haynes was going for, and I don't think it's quite as deep as it thinks it is. I dunno, Haynes is very hit-and-miss for me and this is a fairly big miss. But I'm very much in the minority here, so, you know. Grain of salt. Alyssa and Peter were much more positive on Across the Movie Aisle, you can listen to them yell at me for being "wrong."
