This is my second Thomas Vinterberg film and from the two I’ve seen I can say that this guy is a true master filmmaker. Both this and The Hunt feel so real. That is the best quality of these films. They are so personal and so quiet. The only word to describe them is real. What makes this style so special is that it doesn’t draw attention to itself. The camera, while beautiful and emotional, is subtle and blends in which allows the excellent writing and great performances to shine through. This hyper real style makes the emotional moments feel so much more visceral. It so non-cinematic that it’s themes and emotional moments hit so much harder. I loved this film and I think that it is easily the best of the year so far. It’s subtle and complex and (sorry for being so repetitive) so real.
