Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ★★★★

Fantastic adventure movie. Jack Sparrow's entrance in the movie is one of the most well executed character intros of all time. The triumphant posing on the mast of a ship, staring out towards the horizon with the triumphant score playing only to have the camera pan to reveal a small, rapidly sinking sail boat is iconic and immediately tells the audience everything they need to know about Jack's personality and style.

The way sets are so naturally incorporated into the action is exceptional. The first sword fight between Jack and Will is especially fantastic at this. It can get a bit much at times outside of action scenes where it can feel a bit like characters are going through needless Rube Goldberg machines, but it generally adds to the frenetic energy of the movie. This is most relevant when Elizabeth learns about the curse and basically just fumbles and falls around the ship for a few minutes.

Johnny Depp is obviously the standout performance of the movie, but everyone else turns in great performances as well except for Orlando Bloom, who is a bit wooden in his line delivery.

Overall, this is a great movie and tons of fun.
