Stephen’s review published on Letterboxd:
I read Marvel Comics long before there was any thought of movie franchises, and back in the day my favourite comics were The Fantastic Four and Strange Tales. I loved the psychedelic visuals and the crazy adventures to be had in both comics. The FF films to date have been terrible and hopefully Marvel will address this soon, but I thought they nailed Strange in his solo film and The Avengers Infinity War, so I was hyped for this and wasn’t disappointed.
Not only is Doctor Strange back, but so is Sam Raimi – director of one of the very best Marvel films ever, and we get Wanda/Scarlet Witch to boot, not to mention a new Marvel hero I was previously unaware of – America Chavez.
As ever with these sort of blockbusters you can nit-pick over some of the detail and if you go in determined not to like it, you probably won’t, but that’ll be your loss as this is a well put together action fest with non-stop thrills and several genuine surprises.
Elizabeth Olsen is absolutely standout as the broken Wanda, who’s wounds finally allow The Scarlet Witch to emerge. It’s a genuinely touching performance and is the beating heart of the film. See it on a big screen!
