Seven Samurai

Seven Samurai ★★★★★

Every single rewatch shows me something different, and this time was no different. It's a film with such a simple hook, but it manages to reach into some of the most heady, existential material I can think of. It's about how the presence of war can fluctuate and affect everyone in different ways, and how perhaps the flaws of humanity are simply due to the nature of humanity itself, and that true justice and heroism might be fictional and irrational in the first place. I've reviewed this several times, so I won't go too deep here (although I'm sure I will again someday), but I'll just leave it by saying that this film is one of the greatest gifts ever given to the cinematic medium. The simple fact that a movie this good exists is endlessly thrilling to me. Thank you to Akira Kurosawa, and to everyone involved in the creation of this masterpiece. Your hard work will never go unnoticed :)
