Boy Erased

Boy Erased ★★★

Wonderfully tender and scary look into gay conversion therapy. A real-life tale that has some excellent acting whilst refusing to show some of the more brutal sides of things. Still, what is here is troublesome in the religion vs love battle that takes place here. The problem is that the movie is really quite lopsided. Flashbacks slow the pace further and there is little to connect to. Plus I was very distracted by Nicole Kidman's wig and how I couldn't wait for her to escape her seriously nutty priest husband. Oh, Christianity...
Drinking game: Deciding how repressed and gay the army guy is.
Bottom line: Totally fine but a little too lightweight in the hard-hitting areas to really feel like a classic. Whilst not the same kind of story, Prayers for Bobby hits home so much harder.
