Jake’s review published on Letterboxd:
God how I *miss* when summer blockbusters were *this* fucking weird.... and surprising... and uh.... good.
I think we take it for granted just because of how ingrained in pop culture this series is now, but seriously, what an odd beast of a film. Whatever madman decided to make a swashbuckling pirate adventure and mix it with the Evil Dead, my hat goes off to you. It’s a perfect popcorn movie with a shockingly snappy script, memorable characters and moments, and once things get established, it NEVER stops moving. The CGI holds up remarkably well for 2003, the general direction courtesy of Verbinski is stellar, the cinematography is great, and the physical comedy is just fantastic.
I love when fun childhood classics are as good as I remember.
