The United States vs. Billie Holiday

    ★★½

Finding this a very tough one to organise my thoughts about, because there was a fair bit that I didn’t think was very good, but there was also stuff that I really liked. The writing is shoddy, but I do think it’s been underrated.

So let’s start with the bad.

First of all, I think this would have been a much more watchable film if half an hour of quite formulaic “The FBI Are Shady As Fuck” was shaved…

    Josie and the Pussycats

    ★★★★

Of all the things I've learned since discovering Letterboxd, the most strange & fascinating is that JOSIE & THE PUSSYCATS is apparently a must-watch modern classic.
The only stranger thing is that, having seen it, I kinda agree.

But I don't think it's the subversive critique of capitalism that some do, I just think it's a classic hour-forty comedy, featuring a cast of great actors all having the most fun.

    ★★½

My third Mamet in quick succession. I really didn't take to THE UNTOUCHABLES, I loved GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, & let's say that RONIN is somewhere in the middle.

My god is the bloke responsible for some old-fashioned movies.

Speaking of "bloke", I loved hearing Robert De Niro say that word; as well as the line, 'I once removed a guy’s appendix with a grapefruit spoon'.

Although I kinda wanted it to just end with about half an hour left, this is…

    The Untouchables

    ★★

It took me until some particularly shoddy green-screen work towards the very end of the film for me to twig that it's all pastiche & homage to an older era of cinema than the classic gangster movies it's lumped in with. My god is this an old-fashioned film.

I've gotta say, I didn't particularly enjoy it. I just couldn't handle the complete lack of realism or naturalism, & a protracted stake- & then shoot-out scene, in slow motion, in a train station, involving…
