Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox ★★★★½

I can fit there. Wanna know why? Because I'm LITTLE!

The term "perfect" is often thrown around but it's meaningless and an incredibly reductive concept, especially in regards to art. Perfection is only as impressive as the ambition; the enormity of the attempt essentially determines how impressive the outcome. How successful was the experiment? - for art is, always, an original (expressive) experiment.

With Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson seems to take this concept to heart. He doesn't merely completely succeed: he set the largest possible challenge and overcame it. A stop-motion animated adaptation of a book that he makes completely his own while remaining faithful; with unwavering themes of family, friendship, masculinity, greed, humility, aging, and maturing; an impeccable voice cast; outstanding shot composition; and a brilliant, homely and warm yet sharp and cutting screenplay; that comes together to create something far more lasting than perfection. This is a masterpiece.
