The Northman

The Northman ★★★½

So silly but damn if Eggers' whole deal doesn't work for me really well. No real complaints from me - the compositions are artful (if over-calculated at times), it delivers on hilariously thorough period detail and the spectacle of gruesome violence but also the anguish of it, provides effective emotional weight to the rote revenge tale (a lot of which Anya carries on her constantly impressive shoulders), balances the mythic and fantastical with the bloody, dirty tactility of flesh, and understands that sometimes there is nothing more cinematic than sweaty naked men going "AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!" The wine mums behind me sounded like they were having the night of their lives.
