Neill Shaughness’s review published on Letterboxd:
There will be many comparisons between The Northman and various versions of Hamlet so I won't waste time on that. In stead I will focus on the only comparison that really matters - Who had the better volcano sword fight, The Northman or Revenge of the Sith?
The Northman scores the first point by having considerably less cgi than Sith, but Sith has considerably more flipping.
Hmmm, tie so far.
Northman introduced a really cool finicky magic sword, but... C'mon... lightsabers. Point to Star Wars.
Sith also gets a point for having Ewan Mcgregor in their fight, but immediately gets that point deducted for having Haydon Christianson in the fight.
So far 2-1 Revenge of the Sith.
The score on dismemberment is interesting. Annakin loses three limbs, but do three limbs add up to one head? I don't think so. Point to The Northman. Tied again.
I guess it comes down to who had the better volcano and that is a handsdown Northman Victor. The Gates of Hel are way cooler than some industrial planet no one remembers the names of (shut up, SW nerds. I don't care what its name was).
This is a slight victory for the Northman until you factor in the the volcano climax in the Northman happens at the end of a much better movie.
