Rather a lot of fun! Rustle-Crow was avuncular, charming and funny, the sets were great and it all went a bit batshit bonkers in the final act. Right up my particular dark alley. Sets things up nicely for a sequel (apparently already in the works) and I'd be quite happy to see this turn into a full-blown franchise!
188 minute version watched.
It was superb and worked better than the movie release version with the added space. Also I'd forgotten how great the cinematography on this was, it looks beautiful! Sheer class cast to boot, with Max Von Sydow just the right side of chewing the scenery in a role he was born to play!
Splendidly bonkers sequel to the only slightly less bonkers 'Night Watch'. This just makes me wish that there were more Russian big budget blockbusters, it's grimy urban fantasy aesthetic and excellent mix of practical and cgi effects are a real treat.
And did I mention quite how utterly crazy it is?
It reminded me of Terry Gilliam at his most uncontrolled and anarchic, Jeunet and Caro at their most fantastic, all shot through with deliciously dark and sometimes dappy Russian…
