Wow, I Still Hide to Smoke is an excellent character drama. While it does have main protagonists, it’s main strength is it’s ensemble. Small stories told by a multitude of women in the hammam build upon each other to create a compelling story. These stories they tell are artfully written, clearly communicating the ideas of the film makers while still remaining very realistic dialogue. I find myself engaged with the dialogue of their stories. They usually start small, building into engaging, often upsetting endings. It is the differences between these women, especially their thoughts on premarital pregnancy, that drive the story and ultimately lead to a heartbreaking climax. The climax of this film has to be my favorite part of it. While I won’t spoil it, let me say that it makes the entire movie worth watching. It’s outcome is unexpected, heartbreaking, and even angering. Overall, I would recommend this movie for its excellent characters, realistic dialogue, and very memorable ending. Check it out.
