  • Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood 1988

    Deafula

    ★★★½ Watched by Deafula 18 May 2022 1

There are all these new movies I want to watch and yet I'm watching Friday the 13th Part VII again. This time I'm concentrating on Tina's mom's hair, which is a remarkable mullet helmet that looks both wet and dry, the kind of cut that suggests the salon where Tina's mom got this wind-blown monstrosity under a smoke-stained drop ceiling, where depressed divorcees and widows gathered in the dank regional mall to complain about their shitty teenage children partying up…

My final Reichardt blind spot and deserves more than the afterthought treatment it’s given when discussing her work!

There are enough Australian actors around - why couldn’t you find one?

    Firestarter 2022

    Barton Kimball

★ Watched by Barton Kimball 16 May 2022

The original Firestarter is a pretty low bar to clear and yet this makes the ‘84 film* feel like The Shining. Just lifeless on every level. It looks as flat as a 90’s Lifetime movie, the performances are embarrassing across the board and even the big fire fight at the end is boring (it was the highlight of the Barrymore film). The Carpenter score tries to give it a pulse but this thing is a corpse. I kept wondering what…

the essence of gothic-punk; major, major vampire: the masquerade vibes, it might as well be an adaptation. social democracy achieved by the lumpenprole bonapartist, an invisible dictatorship; more than earns the descriptor of being shakespearean. lawrence fishburne is perhaps the greatest actor in human history, bar none.

DAMN I was prepared by some Letterboxd reviews for this to be better than I'd been led to believe all my life, but I didn't expect it to be this incredible. Perfect moods, lighting, tension, acting. Significantly queerer than I expected, albeit firmly in the Sinister Bisexuality territory. Damn.

man they really think i give a shit about poirot’s inner life. lots of ink spilled on how bad the cgi is in this and it’s somehow even worse than that?

also big ups to kenneth b for calling the fact that labor produces value “a fairy tale” in this (???)

  • The Northman

    The Northman 2022

    ★★★★ Watched by davidehrlich 11 Apr 2022

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

All you really need to know about “The Northman” — a $90 million Viking revenge saga directed by Robert Eggers — is that every single minute of it feels like a $90 million Viking revenge saga directed by Robert Eggers. Both parts of that equation are worth celebrating outside of and in addition to the movie’s other merits.

Even if “The Northman” had been a dreadful bore — and not a primal, sinewy, gnarly-as-fuck 10th century action epic that starts…
