ScreeningNotes’s review published on Letterboxd:
"What a bunch of a-holes."
All about family, of course, whether born, adoptive, or chosen, from Quill’s lost biological mother, to Gamora & Nebula’s abusive adoptive father, to Drax’s dead wife and daughter, to Rocket and Groot’s artificial and singular existence, to the family they finally choose to be together, so of course it's only too appropriate that the movie insults its characters every chance it gets. The only thing we love as much as we love our family is how much we love to hate our family.
"I'm gonna die surrounded by the biggest idiots in the galaxy."
Rocket's "I didn't ask to get made!" hit the hardest this time around. We tend to take our closest family and friends for granted emotionally, we burden them with our pain and our hate and our grief, we give them our frustrations because we think they can take it, but we forget the ways that our casual negativity can build up on them, even if we don't intend it seriously. None of us is without flaw, and none of us asked to get made, so the least we could do is be kind to one another.
"I look around at us, and you know what I see? Losers. I mean, like, folks who have lost stuff. And we have, man, we have. All of us. And you think life takes more than it gives, but not today. Today it's giving us something. It's giving us a chance."
