First Cow

First Cow ★★★★½

Kelly Reichardt’s films are honestly of a different breed, which is exemplified in First Cow. She continues her signature style of subtlety here but to me was not boring in any way. First Cow is quiet and slowly paced, but it is the attention to detail that makes this such a rewarding watch. One of Reichardt’s specialties is immersing the viewer in the story. Once again, attention to detail, not only in regard to setting but also characters made me feel as if I knew the film’s protagonists very well by the end of the runtime. But what’s so impressive to me is that most of this is done subconsciously. There are certainly themes of capitalism and toxic masculinity at play in this film, but Reichardt’s voice isn’t shouting her message. Rather, it feels more like a conversation.

Don’t expect an exciting watch. First Cow is exceptionally contemplative and asks for your patience and attention and is certainly a rewarding watch.
