    The Holdovers

    ★★★★½

Directed by Alexander Payne and starring the ever wonderful Paul Giamatti, The Holdovers has easily become one of my quintessential Christmas films as of this point forward. Taking place in the 1970’s and set to the backdrop of the Vietnam War, The Holdovers is a coming-of-age story exploring the unlikely bond between Angus, a smart-as-a-whip student with a penchant to be a general asshole, and Paul Hunham, the stick-in-the-mud instructor (who has the proclivity to go on long winded and wordy tangents…

Anatomy of a Fall is a bold offering from director Justine Triet that delves into the exploration of the untimely demise of Samuel (Samuel Theis), and the aftermath faced by his wife, Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hüller). Having little to no knowledge on the film (other than the praise it received at festivals), I anticipated a story akin to the twisty-turny nature of Gone Girl or the creative intensity of Park Chan-wook’s 2022 film, Decision to Leave. However, Justine Triet’s vision eschews the conventional…

    The Holdovers

    ★★★★½

Feels like those rare, infinitely rewatchable films that come out every few years. Alexander Payne struck gold with this. Best picture contender for sure. Paul Giammatti is wonderful in the film and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he is, at the very least, nominated.

Honestly quite surprised I managed to squeeze in a movie this week, what with my wedding coming up this weekend. Crazy…

Anyways, this is my first Tōru Murakawa film - and the third installment to The Game trilogy (I wasn’t really aware it was a trilogy, but at least it is just loosely connected) - and I’ve got to say, I found this to be quite enjoyable. THE EXECUTION GAME wears its inspiration of Jean-Pierre Melville and his French classic, LE…

“There’s always the kangaroo, Mr. Riggs...”

Watched for the Collab Film Club

Directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock, and written by Hume Cronyn, Under Capricorn ended up being a box office failure — partly due to the audience belief that the film was supposed to be a thriller and possibly because of Ingrid Bergman’s scandalous relationship with Italian director Roberto Rossellini. This all factors in the films overall obscure nature when speaking on Alfred Hitchcock’s filmography, something I think is unwarranted…

"It was hard. It was really hard for a long time."

Understated in its beauty, Columbus tells a tale old as time — a story of yearning to be heard, to be loved, to be understood. The minimalist lens in which this realistically optimistic story is told, lends itself to a deeper meaning as it invites us to reflect on the many facets of life that we use to build healthy relationships.

A contemplative narrative centered around two characters unknowingly crying for…
