Man you could spend days, weeks, months combing through the frames of this thing and still be turning up whole new universes of visual invention.

More aesthetic originality and sheer effort in throwaway shots than any other animated feature going, including all the films released in the wake of the first Spider-Verse that have followed its lead in pushing past the ingrained visual orthodoxies of mainstream computer animation.

And I love most of those movies. But while every other studio was…

    The Super Mario Bros. Movie

    ★★★

As a Mario fan I can’t really imagine what a better Mario movie would be. Pretty thin characters and story, but it’s-a Mario, waddya gonna do. I think Nintendo probably had em on a tight leash (like the fabled Chain Chomp himself) in terms of how deep or irreverent it could be

Didn’t think we’d ever see a new contender for ‘Best Shrek Movie’, and yet…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Life is a funny old thing so here I am finally watching the Shell movie like a week after my Gran dies, with the last few months of her life pretty closely mirroring what happens to Marcel’s Nana in the film

Prettty tough going! But I’m glad it worked out that way. I’ve been having a bit of trouble really letting myself FEEL the weight of what’s happened, so it was nice to have Marcel there to work through it…
