Sam Morrison’s review published on Letterboxd:
Not quite what I was expecting. A decent adventure movie but a weak follow up to the masterpiece that was Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I've heard some mention the overall structure of the movie is a mess. Completely accurate. While the first ten minutes or so start out with an incredible pace and get things really rolling, it falls off a cliff and cracks its neck on the way down. Things really fall apart. The middle is a bunch of filler with no significant events. We get a stronger third act, but by then I was checked out of the narrative.
Harrison Ford is also very underwhelming. 90% of his dialog is delivered in monotone, and the rest is over acted. He's just not himself for some reason.
I have to mention just how painfully and culturally insensitive this movie is. Indian culture, mainly their cuisine, is butchered for comedic reasons. It gives people the complete wrong impression. Also a comment here and there from/about Short Round had me rolling my eyes.
This isn't Indy at his best in any way. We were spoiled with Raiders but there's gotta be ways to do better than this, and I'm hoping Last Crusade answers that for me.
