The Godfather ★★★★★

Bonasera believes in America, yet bows to Don Vito’s feet and thirsts for bloodshed when its judicial system fails him. Michael too believes in America, yet he runs from its rule when it also turns on him. Both want to find paradise in America, but ironically, are more willing to invest their trust in those who break the law, rather than uphold it. In The Godfather, America is viewed as a system that can be bested. A place whose freedom can be taken advantage of. It’s a compelling through-line, one that offers endless possibilities the more you unravel it.

I’ve tried to string together thoughts in a longer, more essay-like approach since I saw The Godfather a couple weeks back many times now, and every time, I end with an empty page. Perfection is a hard thing to comprehend.
