watched because I recently saw MURDER, MY SWEET for the first time and found it to be a stone cold classic, so I was interested in what this would bring to the table. answer: ... outside of Mitchum, basically nothing! feels like TV with its near-absence of visual style, and the dialogue, so razor sharp in MURDER, doesn't pop nearly as well here. at times, it's as if the director is leaving half a beat too long between lines. just…

gorgeous and magical, as you'd expect. does that very Miyazaki thing where it seems to be starting slowly and you get a little sleepy and suddenly there's a *ton* of shit happening, and you don't want to miss a frame. scarier than usual in some truly remarkable nightmare sequences. and to top it all off, Miyazaki adds another great Weird Little Guy to the Weird Little Guy canon. yet another triumph for one of the GOATs. three cheers for the Parakeet King.
