    This really should be titled “The History of Jazz according to Wynton Marsalis.” 


    Marsalis is known for his rejection of the innovations and fusions of the 1960s and 70s. He is a traditionalist who sees New Orleans style and swing as the pinnacle of jazz. Burns shows that he is similarly interested in canonizing this limited view of jazz.     I loved this film when it was first released. I remember taking friends and family to the theaters for multiple viewings. 

    Eighteen years later, it still blows me away. Cruise’s performance got a lot of hype, but the performances by Hoffman, Reilly, Robards, and Moore are among their best. And I know a lot of folks really love Boogie Nights, but Magnolia is when PTA really hooked me.
