    A Haunting in Venice

We are met with a more sombre Poirot. Gleaming masks, bobbing apples and decaying buildings. He sees the Venice that is sinking. Michelle Yeoh and Tina Fey bring warmth and wit. Less (moustache) is more.

    XOXO

    ★★

Flippity flip goes the countdown clock, relaying the seconds spent before a thousand sweaty festival goers roar your name. Glowing beckons the toilet, before swallowing you Trainspotting-like, to be ejected into a red haze of outstretched hands and crowdsurfed joy.

For sure a debut effort in its sketched characters and one-dimensional conflicts, but XOXO musters some fun images and has the benefit of Sarah Hyland in the cast. Mostly it feels like an earnest love letter to EDM festivals, where happiness is just a glowstick (and a kiss) away.

So the Avengers are back! After their explosive first film in 2012, this super squad re-teams to once again save the world. Cue funny one-liners, excessive action setpieces and cool comic book freeze frames.

Like its predecessor, Age of Ultron excels when the jokes are flowing fast and we get the 'human' perspective of this superhuman world. Thanks to the efforts of writer-director Joss Whedon, the heroes dance in varying degrees of self-awareness – even as they own their considerable…
