On the Rocks ★★½

NYFF 58 - Virtual Screening #1

I personally love Sofia Coppola movies but this one just fell flat. The storyline is nowhere close to being original and felt almost inaccessible with the constant name dropping of the expensive restaurants they would go to or even the fact that they live in the heart of SoHo. Usually when I think of a Sofia Coppola movie I think beautiful cinematography, set design and a script that pulls you in. While this one felt dull and like any random person could have directed this. Rashida Jones was probably one of the only redeeming factors of this film as she brought the well needed energy back into this as Bill Murray’s character drained it through consistently spewing misogynistic bullshit. Overall, this was pretty much a disappoint but it was enjoyable enough to watch being that there hardly is anything new these days. Also points added for the use of Chet Bakers “I Get Along Without You Very Well” and Rashida always sporting the empty Strand tote bag and Chanel purse on the same shoulder when picking up the kids from school.
