A very hard film to rate. After a nice tracking shot opening (which, to be fair, is really just the accordion sequence from Holy Motors only with people singing rather than playing the accordion) we get at least 45 minutes of the pretentious trope, beloved of successful creative types, that being being a successful creative type is hellish dealing with all that celebrity and audience expectation.
But I started to warm to Annette when the title character actually appeared and…
It's hard to believe that this isn't some "Man in the High Castle" style product of a Hollywood in an alternate dimension where the Confederacy won the Civil War.
Some very fine moments of film making; one abject failure of a cohesive motion picture.
