Let me just say I very much enjoyed this Danish dark drama and also hated it at the same time. This actor turned director Christian Tafdrupย really knew what he wanted to do with this film. This is a cautionary tale about letting others cross oneโ€™s boundaries for the sake of civility. If you pay close attention you would notice how early in the film the vetting actually started. From the first interaction where Patrick (Fedjaย Van Huet)ย asked to use Bjorn(Morten Burian)ย aka โ€œMr. Beta husbandโ€ daughters chair that she was clearly using. I donโ€™t know what it was but for some reason ย Bjรธrn really developed a platonic attraction and admired this stranger so much so he accepted an offer for him his wife and daughter to visit a family of complete strangers. Let me just say you really have to suspend your ย disbelief for majority of theย dumb decisions this man made in order to swallow this premise. Me personally iam not saying I canโ€™t be polite but trust is something you have to gain from me. So itโ€™s no way Iโ€™m taking my family to visit people I donโ€™t know from a can of paint. Nor do I tolerate disrespect in the slightest especially to the ones I love. Letโ€™s just say I did accept this invite with my wife and daughter(which I wouldnโ€™t do). The first time you disrespect anybody in my family ima let it be known right then and there. Thereโ€™s a difference between being polite and being spineless. They just let too much go on for entirely too long or atleast the husband did. That part where the father turned around made me so mad I just didnโ€™t care for there safety anymore. ย Everything was a test of how much they could get away with. Like cmon bro who lets a stranger of a stranger watch there young daughter in another country lol. Itโ€™s just not that much trust in the world. At some point in the film I started to think maybe Bjรธrn was gay especially the way he looked at the other husband and by the conversation they had in the car. The film never suggested he was but it did leave something in the air. Usually I donโ€™t talk about certain plots points ย in my review but I really just had to rant a little bit. Overall I found this to be a pretty good drama/horror that is very anxiety inducing and a little weird which I like. I feel like I havenโ€™t seen a film like this since Funny Gamesย though I feel they did the whole family drama horror genre just a tad bit better. The film builds and builds tension with a shocking conclusion that you knew was coming but how and when was the mystery.
