It’s so easy to just label this a fluke, a behemoth that showed up, became the biggest movie of all time, and left just as quickly. But revisiting this in its newly remastered IMAX form really highlights how, a decade-plus on, there’s barely anything that looks even half this good. There are shots here that genuinely blow my mind, and with every bit of marvelously detailed animation, vibrant color and texture, the images achieve a level of depth and beauty that is still unmatched. Sure, you could continue to rag on it’s narrative deficiencies, which is totally fair, but for me Cameron’s usual potent blend of spectacle and romance is too effective to care. The singular work of a man with a preternatural ability to give the audience exactly what they need.
