Knives Out

Knives Out ★★★★½

Succession but make it whodunnit.

Clever, witty, and extremely delightful without having the need of showboating, Rian Johnson's "Knives Out" is a balls-to-the-wall contemporary classic whodunnit offering a fun mystery mayhem that manages to subvert our expectations the whole time, zagging right when we thought it's about to zig while keeping us clueless on our toes from start to finish. It's piled with twist after twist but never once does it feel bloated. Rather, every pieces will fall into its places with a surgical precision by the time you get to the end of the film. And most of all, Rian Johnson has brilliantly found a way to give a breath of fresh air to an otherwise stale genre by both honoring and toying the conventional formula at the same time.

While the script is sharply written and the performances by the ensemble are lively, to me, what eventually sets "Knives Out" apart is how it evolves into a relevant social commentary about class hierarchy. That being said, seeing "Knives Out" is the most fun you're gonna have all year. This is the reason why I love cinema in the first place!
