MCU Smackdown

MCU #16: "I’m Merry Poppins y’all!”

Knowing that we are familiar with the characters at this point, James Gunn leans confidently into more humor, delving into each characters idiosyncrasies to hilarious effect. Drax continues to deliver the best lines, but his scenes with the naive and immensely charming Manta are to die for.

One of the most joyful scenes of the series, and possibly the MCU, is the opening sequence where the GoG fights some monstrosity while baby groot dances to Mr. Blue Sky by ELO. I found myself so enraptured by the sequence that when the music unceremoniously gets cut off I get mildly annoyed.

While the movie meanders a bit in the middle act, Gunn nails the ending after a climactic battle and a heartfelt send off to Yondu to Father and Son by Cat Stevens. We get fantastic cameos from Sylvester Stallone, Ving Rhames, Michelle Yeoh, and Miley Cyrus. If you didn't tear up during that sequence you aren't human.

RIP Yondu.
